Spotlight on Awards

AHEAD Awards

Archer Humphryes has picked up 6 awards in the European Ahead Awards in late 2020 and a grand prize at the Global Ahead Awards in early 2021.

For the Global awards, Calum Lindsay described in Dezeen in February 2021 ‘how the winners of the AHEAD Global hospitality awards has brought the industry together during the coronavirus pandemic. The AHEAD Global awards, which celebrate striking hospitality projects from around the world, announced its winners in a livestream that was broadcast on Dezeen in December. The event was the culmination of a two-year programme of events split into four different regions: Europe, Middle East and Africa (MEA), Asia and the Americas.’

"Ahead awards brings the industry together," said Amar Lalvani, CEO of Standard International, whose Standard Hotel in London won the Social Scene Award. "In the year of the pandemic when people are so far apart, to bring industry people together and recognise the hard work that our teams do to bring projects to life means more now than it ever did," he continues. Archer Humphryes celebrated the win by joining the virtual ceremony.

For Europe the Grand Prize of the night was awarded to The Standard, a transformation of the former Camden Town Hall Annex in Kings Cross. One judge described the 1970s punk narrative as ‘an avalanche on the senses’, while another believed the property was ‘exactly what the London hotel scene needed’.

The Standard, London also snapped up all of its nominated categories at The AHEAD Awards, Europe. These were:

  • Bar, Club or Lounge

Double Standard is The Standard’s bar and terrace. It incorporates a London Underground theme and is increasingly becoming the place to be. The judges loved that the “Modern and vintage furniture pieces work in harmony to create ‘a warm energy’ that bewitches guests into staying for hours on end”.

  • Hotel Conversion

Previously a commercial office building, The Standard was converted into a one-of-a-kind hotel. The judges applauded the transformation from a building which “was once seen as an eye-sore into ‘a modern, relevant and distinctive’ hotel”.

  • Lobby & Public Spaces

The Standard’s lobby area ‘The Library Lounge’ really does what it says on the tin and is a nod to the Camden Council office library that previously resided here. With its dark furniture and cosy atmosphere, you really can imagine getting lost in one of their many books for hours.

  • Restaurant

Decimo, Chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias’ restaurant, combines the Spanish cuisine of his family with his love of Mexico. The restaurant is located on the 10th floor of the building and has The Standard’s signature red lift going accessing it directly from the hotel entrance. With floor-to-ceiling windows, burgundy & green interior and an array of cacti and succulents, it’s no wonder the judges picked it as the winner.

  • AHEAD Europe Hotel of the Year

Last but not least, Archer Humphryes were thrilled that The Standard won the coveted AHEAD Europe, Hotel of the Year award.
